A newly constructed faecal sludge treatment plant and landfill to improve sanitation services in Nyanza district
Nyanza, 27 September 2020: Minister of Infrastructure visited different infrastructure projects in Nyanza to highlight the government’s commitment to upgrading their impact on Rwanda’s long-term economic plan.
Among the projects visited include a newly Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant and a modern landfill. The infrastructure projects were established through a partnership of Nyanza district and Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) to ensure adequate access to improved sanitation services for human well-being and the ecosystem. The partnerships resulted with construction of the above mentioned sanitation infrastructures and the Water supply system including Water Treatment Plant with the capacity of 5,000m3/day. All these systems were financed by African Development Bank under the program dubbed Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation (LV WATSAN). The program was implemented in three district, Nyanza, Kayonza and Nyagatare.
In Nyanza District, the program started in April 2015 and completed in July, 2018 and costed around 12 Billion Rwandan francs. The completed Fecal sludge Treatment plant with design capacity to treat 40m3/day is currently receiving between 15-20 m3/day fecal sludge collected from different locations including Households, Public offices, Market, Schools and Commercial building. Whereas modern landfill treat 5 tons/day the above mentioned locations. So far, WASAC is managing both infrastructures, as it awaits for the district to recruit a private operator who will take over for daily management of the systems.
Prior to this project, the emptied sludge was not treated in a proper disposal, thus it was dumped in an open environment or improper dumping site which was causing health and environmental problems.
