Friday, 15th November 2024, The 16th Council of Ministers (CoM) Meeting convened in a spirit of unity and shared purpose, bringing together three Ministers in charge of energy and distinguished leaders from Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi. Hosted in the vibrant setting of the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project, the gathering underscored the commitment of the three nations to advancing sustainable energy, fostering regional integration, and addressing shared development challenges.

In his opening remarks, Minister of Infrastructure Dr. Jimmy GASORE highlighted the significance of the Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project as a symbol of regional collaboration and progress. This ambitious initiative aligns closely with the shared vision of the East African Community and the African Union, aiming to enhance energy security, stimulate economic growth, and bolster climate action efforts.

The Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project: A Landmark for Sustainability
The centrepiece of the meeting was the 80 MW Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project, a transformative infrastructure initiative designed to supply clean, renewable electricity across the borders of Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi. This project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, leveraging shared resources to tackle energy shortages, reduce dependency on non-renewable energy, and create opportunities for millions of people.

Participants commended the project's contributions to local employment, economic growth, and access to essential services, particularly in underserved rural areas. The project’s focus on renewable energy further aligns with global commitments to combat climate change, setting a precedent for future sustainable initiatives in the region.

Looking Ahead: A Call for Continued Unity and Action
As the meeting concluded, leaders reaffirmed their dedication to regional integration through cooperative infrastructure projects. Discussions highlighted the need to address infrastructure gaps, foster trust, and prioritize the voices of local communities.

The Rusumo Project was celebrated as a foundation for future partnerships that span not only energy but also transportation, telecommunications, and beyond.

The 16th CoM Meeting serves as a reminder of the transformative power of shared vision and collective effort. Leaders left inspired to deepen collaboration, tackle regional challenges, and advance a brighter, sustainable future for East Africa
