Kanzenze Water Treatment Plant to bring sustainable solution to water challenges in the City of Kigali and Bugesera

Kigali, 1 November 2020: Minister of Infrastructure, Hon. Claver Gatete together with the Chief Executive Officer of Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) visited Kigali Water distribution network including Water Reservoirs and the pipeline under testing phase and ready to supply water from Kanzenze Water Treatment Plant  (WTP) before end of December 2020.

The 40,000 m3/day Kanzenze Water Treatment Plant will supply 30,000m3/day to the City of Kigali and 10,000m3/day to Bugesera District. The Plant and its forwarding infrastructure will supplement existing water network in a strategic move to meet the growing water demand in Kigali and surrounding areas.

Minister Gatete visited pipes crossing Akagera River between Bugesera and Kicukiro Districts as well as the crossing of existing culverts, which are already completed. He also visited works of laying and testing pipe from Kanzenze WTP to the 7,500 cubic meter Gahanga reservoir that will allow water to flow by gravity to Remera and Kanombe areas.

Other project’s components visited by Minister Gatete include the 2,000 cubic meter Kicukiro Rwandatel reservoir, Remera Reservoir (10,000 m3) and their related networks.

After touring the water network, Minister Gatete commended the contractor for the progress and urged him to fast-track the remaining final interconnections and testing works in an effort to get residents of mostly affected parts of City of Kigali (Kanombe, Nyarugunga, Masaka, Rusororo, Kimironko) and Bugesera District provided with clean water before the end of December 2020.

Kanzenze WTP is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) being developed by Kigali Water Limited (KWL), a fully owned subsidiary of Metito, a global provider for water management solutions.

The project is a milestone in Rwanda’s progressive vision to build an economic, prosperous and first class developed country.  It will provide secured and sustainable water supply that will have a huge impact on the socio-economy development of the country.
