Ngororero Water Supply System: A Transformative Milestone in Access to Clean Water
In 2022, the Government of Rwanda, through the Water and Sanitation Group, contracted the BAOYE HUBEI Construction Engineering Group to undertake the construction of the Ngororero Water Supply System, under the supervision of JV GAUFF & CIR SAS. Now, the project has reached a successful completion, bringing with it a remarkable impact on the community.
The Ngororero Water Supply System, which spans the Western Province of Rwanda, includes three fully operational water treatment plants—Muhembe, Nyamwotsi, and Nyirarongero—that are now providing 3,078 m3 per day of clean and reliable water to the citizens of Ngororero district. The system has captured and treated 40 water sources through three water treatment plants, and channels water through 202-kilometer distribution network, 41 reservoirs, ensuring that a total of 3,078 cubic meters of water are daily supplied through 115 water points. The completion of this project costed around 9.5 Billion Rwandan Francs.

For the residents of Ngororero, the project represents a significant leap forward in improving public health and quality of life. Among the many beneficiaries, Muragijimana Jean Bosco, a resident of Kageyo Sector, Kageshi Cellule, and Mukaka Village, expressed his joy over the newly available clean water. He shared that access to clean water had long been a challenge in the region, resulting in waterborne diseases, particularly affecting children. Thanks to the Government of Rwanda’s efforts, clean water is now available closer to homes, drastically improving the health and well-being of the community.
Another resident, Gaudence, from the same sector, also shared her thoughts, emphasizing the positive impact on daily life. She revealed that children are now no longer late for school, as they no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water. In the past, the time spent fetching water was a significant barrier to daily routines. Gaudence further praised the government for its commitment to good governance, stating that the provision of clean water reflects the government's dedication to improving citizens' lives.

The Ngororero Water Supply System is a testament to Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable development, particularly in the area of water and sanitation. The project, which cost a total of 588,368 Euros, has provided not only essential infrastructure but also hope and improved living standards to thousands of people in Ngororero district.
As the system continues to operate, it stands as a model for other regions, showing that with effective governance and dedicated partnerships, even the most pressing challenges can be overcome. The people of Ngororero, from Kageyo Sector to all parts of the district, can now look forward to a future where access to clean water is no longer a distant dream, but a daily reality.
This successful project is just one of many that highlight the Government of Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of its citizens and ensuring access to essential services for all.
