Putting Citizens First: Rugerero Model Village Showcases Rwanda’s Commitment to Sustainable Human Settlements

Rugerero IDP Model Village Transforms Lives Through Integrated Infrastructure and Inclusive Development

Residents of the Rugerero Model Village, located in Rugerero Sector of Rubavu District, have expressed their appreciation to the Government of Rwanda for bringing essential infrastructure closer to them, significantly improving their quality of life.

The family of Ndayambaje Oreste is among the beneficiaries of the village. He and his spouse explain that prior to relocating to the model village, they lived in very difficult conditions. However, after resettlement, they organized themselves into groups, enabling them to improve their livelihoods by making productive use of the infrastructure provided by the Government, particularly the integrated crafts production center, where they engage in various income-generating activities, including tailoring.

Munganyinka Belle Fille, Oreste’s spouse and a resident of the Rugerero Model Village, stated:
“Before, we lived under very harsh conditions, but after settling here, we organized ourselves into groups and were able to make good use of the infrastructure provided by the Government.”

She further explained that access to basic services was challenging before they moved to the village. “There were times when taking a child to school was very difficult due to the lack of nearby schools. Today, schools are available, our children study close to home, and we also have a health center. Truly, we have no major challenges, and we are grateful to the Government, which continues to put citizens first.”

The Early Childhood Development Center plays a vital role in nurturing young children and supporting families in the Rugerero IDP Model Village

The Rugerero Model Village comprises residential houses, an early childhood development center, a market, a production center, a health facility, and a designated area for livestock farming, particularly poultry. The village is also served by paved roads and is connected to electricity and clean water.

The Model Village valued at Rwf 18.4 billion and was officially inaugurated in July 2023 during the commemoration of the 29th Liberation Day. It currently accommodates approximately 120 households.

Beyond Rugerero, the Government of Rwanda, in collaboration with various partners, has constructed more than 253 model villages across the country, significantly contributing to improved living standards and national economic development.
