Thursday, 31st October, 2024
In a significant step toward strengthening the relationship between the Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of Malawi, Hon. Dr. Jimmy Gasore, Rwanda's Minister of Infrastructure, presided over the signing ceremony of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the two nations. This agreement, establishes a framework for air transport operations between Rwanda and Malawi, fostering greater connectivity, trade, and collaboration.
Minister Gasore acknowledged the signing as a testament to the "strong ties and collaborative spirit between our nations." He underscored the importance of the BASA, noting that “With both Malawi and Rwanda as African nations, this YD-compliant agreement creates a solid foundation for our airlines to operate air transport services. Air travel, as the fastest mode of transportation, plays an essential role in facilitating trade and building stronger business bonds.”
The BASA agreement is the outcome of diligent collaboration between Civil Aviation Authorities and diplomatic officials from both countries. This effort reflects the growing diplomatic momentum between Rwanda and Malawi, leading to the expeditious finalization of the agreement. The cooperation between the two nations marks a new chapter in Rwanda and Malawi’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties, enhancing economic opportunities, and expanding air service networks within and beyond the region
RwandAir's Chief Executive, Yvonne Makolo, along with a high-level delegate from Malawi (left side), attended the BASA signing ceremony as witnesses.
Through the establishment of this framework, Rwanda and Malawi aim to open and connect markets, promoting seamless trade and enabling their citizens to participate in broader supply chains. The bilateral agreement allows designated airlines from each country to operate with predictability, providing travellers with expanded choices and reliable air services.
The BASA also sets forth the path toward ratification by each country’s constitutional requirements, signifying an essential step toward the agreement’s full implementation. Minister Gasore affirmed Rwanda’s commitment to promptly complete the ratification process, promising to “send the instrument of ratification once it is completed.”
In concluding his remarks, Minister Gasore reiterated Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Malawi. He highlighted that this agreement serves as a catalyst for future cooperation in trade and development, establishing a reliable and mutually beneficial framework for designated airlines to operate and grow.
The signing of the Rwanda-Malawi BASA marks a critical milestone in advancing regional integration and connectivity, bringing significant economic and social benefits to both nations.
