Rwamagana, 23 September 2026, the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of the Karenge Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Karenge Sector, Rwamagana District, is expected to significantly strengthen water supply services in Rwamagana, Kigali and surrounding areas as the project progresses towards completion.

Implemented by WASAC Group with financing from Exim Bank Hungary, the strategic water supply infrastructure project aims to increase the capacity of the existing Karenge Water Treatment Plant from 12,000 cubic metres per day to 48,000 cubic metres per day.

The project includes the construction of a new 36,000 cubic metres per day water treatment facility, alongside the rehabilitation of the existing plant. It also comprises the development of a new water intake structure on Lake Mugesera, transmission pipelines, a pumping station, a 5,000-cubic-metre reservoir at Kimicanga, and other associated support facilities.

The expanded water treatment capacity will contribute to meeting the growing demand for safe and reliable water services, particularly in areas experiencing rapid urbanisation and population growth.

As of 30 August 2026, the project had achieved 60.91% overall physical progress.

On 23 September 2026, Minister of State Armand Zingiro visited the Karenge Water Treatment Plant project to assess its progress and emphasised the need to accelerate the remaining construction works.

The Minister of State called on the project management and implementing teams to fast-track the works so that the project can begin delivering water to its designated service areas, particularly Rwamagana and Kigali, where demand for water continues to grow amid rapid urbanisation.

The project is expected to contribute to improving the reliability and coverage of water supply services while supporting the continued growth and development of Rwamagana, Kigali and surrounding communities.

Once completed, the expanded Karenge Water Treatment Plant will increase available water production capacity by 36,000 cubic metres per day, bringing the combined capacity of the existing and new facilities to 48,000 cubic metres per day.

The project therefore represents an important investment in Rwanda’s water supply infrastructure and forms part of ongoing efforts to expand access to reliable and adequate water services in response to the country’s growing urban population and increasing demand for water.
