Minister of State for Infrastructure, Amb. Jean de Dieu UWIHANGAYE, conducted a comprehensive field visit from 26 August 2025, touring key infrastructure projects across the Southern, Western, and Northern provinces. The inspection aimed to assess progress, ensure timely delivery, and reaffirm the Government’s commitment to improving citizens’ livelihoods through modern infrastructure.

In the Southern Province, the Minister inspected completed works on the Kibugabuga–Shinga–Gasoro road, and the Mwogo and Rukarara bridges, which connect Nyamagabe and Nyanza districts. He also visited the Hakan Peat Power Plant, which has a generation capacity of 70 megawatts.

“Infrastructure is the backbone of our socio-economic transformation. Roads and bridges not only connect communities but also open opportunities for trade, agriculture, and access to essential services,” the Minister emphasized during the visit.

Continuing to the Western Province, Amb. UWIHANGAYE toured several strategic projects, including the Rusizi Port, designed to enhance mobility and boost cross-border trade along Lake Kivu. He further visited the Gishoma Peat Power Plant and inspected a 4.2 km road across Rusizi city.

In Karongi District, he reviewed progress on the KivuBelt water project and the Kibuye–Kiziba road (14.5 km). The Minister later convened a meeting with provincial leaders to exchange views on expediting infrastructure works. He also inspected the Kivu Methane Gas Power Plant, which aims to harness Lake Kivu’s resources for sustainable energy production.

The 14.5 km Kibuye–Kiziba road plays a critical role in enhancing connectivity within Karongi District

“Energy projects such as Gishoma, Hakan, and Kivu Methane are part of our strategy to diversify Rwanda’s energy mix, ensuring stable, affordable, and sustainable electricity for all Rwandans,” noted Amb. UWIHANGAYE.

He concluded his visit in the Northern Province with a stop at the Nyabarongo Hydropower Project, which is expected to generate 40 megawatts by 2028.

The Nyabarongo Hydropower Project, expected to generate over 40 megawatts by 2028, stands as a mega project set to significantly boost Rwanda’s electricity development

“These projects reflect the Government’s vision to prioritize citizens’ needs, accelerate industrialization, and foster inclusive growth. Our focus is not only on building infrastructure but also on building a better future for every Rwandan,” he said.

This tour underscores the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring timely delivery of projects aligned with Rwanda’s development agenda, particularly under Vision 2050, where infrastructure plays a central role in driving transformation and improving the quality of life for citizens.
