Musanze, 11^th August 2026, The Ministry of Infrastructure, in partnership with development partners in the urbanisation sector, convened a three-day Capacity Building Workshop in Musanze District aimed at strengthening district-level leadership and technical capacity to design and implement high-quality nature-based solutions that enhance climate resilience, promote sustainable urbanisation and drive inclusive local economic development.

The workshop brought together district-level leaders and technical staff from across the country, including Vice Mayors in charge of Economic Development, representatives of One Stop Centres and other stakeholders working in environmental conservation, urban development and sustainable development.

The training provided a platform for participants to share experiences, exchange knowledge and engage in practical discussions on approaches to integrating nature-based solutions into local development planning and infrastructure projects.

Nature-based solutions are increasingly recognised as an important approach to addressing climate-related challenges while delivering environmental, social and economic benefits. By working with natural systems and integrating green infrastructure into development, districts can strengthen resilience to climate impacts, improve the quality of urban environments and support more sustainable growth.

As part of the workshop, participants conducted a field visit to ongoing infrastructure projects in Musanze District, including a road project and a food court. The projects provided practical examples of how green infrastructure and other environmentally sensitive approaches can be integrated into infrastructure development while supporting sustainable urbanisation and preserving the environment.

The field visit also enabled participants to examine practical experiences and discuss how similar approaches can be adapted to different local contexts across the country.

The workshop underscored the importance of strengthening the capacity of local authorities to plan, implement and maintain infrastructure that responds to climate challenges while contributing to inclusive economic development.

The Ministry of Infrastructure reaffirmed its commitment to promoting nature-based solutions and climate-resilient infrastructure as key components of Rwanda’s sustainable urbanisation agenda and efforts to build resilient, inclusive and environmentally sustainable communities.

Through continued capacity building and collaboration with districts and development partners, the Ministry seeks to strengthen the integration of nature-based solutions into infrastructure planning and implementation, ensuring that development investments deliver lasting benefits for communities and the environment.
