New roads are improving Rwanda’s secondary cities
30 March, 2021- Residents in Rwanda’s six secondary cities say their lives are being changed, for the better, by an ongoing, Rwanda Urban Development Project (RUDP), the World Bank-funded project to provide roads, street lighting and drainage systems.
The overall project development objective is to improve access to sustainable infrastructure and services, and strengthen urban management and resilience in low income areas in the City of Kigali and the 6 Secondary Cities of Rwanda which are Nyagatare, Musanze, Rubavu, Rusizi, Huye and Muhanga.
The urbanisation of secondary cities is paramount to connecting people to efficient basic infrastructure facilities such as access clean water, electricity, adequate shelters, roads, schools, hospitals thus positively improving standards of living for people and quality of their lives.
Road infrastructure facilities and other related features in secondary cities are expected to make the districts prosperous socio-economic hubs through business and tourism activities.
Along the second phase of the project, a total of 39.7km of road infrastructures and 10.7 km of drainage systems are underway and have reached above 80% of completion.
