Government to apply geogrid technology to ensure protection of roads

22 May, 2021- Minister of Infrastructure together with Mayors of Ngororero and Nyabihu Districts, Deputy DG of RTDA and other officials, visited different spots affected by heavy rains along Muhanga-Ngororero-Mukamira road to discuss ways of repairing damaged spots and solutions to ensure that the road is protected and passable.

On 24 April 2021, Hon. Minister of Infrastructure together with Mayors of Ngororero and Nyabihu Districts, Deputy DG of RTDA and other officials, visited different infrastructure facilities including roads and bridges affected by heavy rains along Muhanga-Ngororero-Mukamira road to discuss ways of repairing damaged spots & solutions to ensure that the road is protected and passable. Rehabilitation works for the affected areas are ongoing.

During the site visit, it was observed that storm waters and severe floods impacted the Rwanda during the recent rainy seasons transportation was disrupted in some locations. Rehabilitation works for the affected areas are ongoing.

 

The officials discussed different ways of mitigation and preventing landslides from damaging roads and other connected infrastructures including the application of a reinforced soil technology to roads in areas mostly affected by landslides. It is a technology which consists of strong tensile materials, commonly known as geogrid, to reinforce soils on roads embankments.  Ngororero-Mukamira is one road where the technology is going to be applied.
